Mechanism of action
Stable complex of iron (III) hydroxide-dextran, which is analogous to the physiological form of iron, ferritin (protein complex iron hydroxide phosphate).
therapeutic indications
In adults for the treatment of Fe deficiency when oral Fe preparations cannot be used, e.g. due to intolerance or in case of demonstrated loss of effect of oral iron therapy or when there is a clinical need for rapid delivery of Fe to Fe stores.
Establish diagnosis based on appropriate laboratory tests (eg, serum ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation, and hypochromic red blood cells).
Administration mode
IV/IM route. By IV drip infusion or by slow IV injection, of which IV drip infusion is the route of administration of choice as it may help reduce the risk of hypotensive episodes. It can also be administered as an undiluted solution, IM.
